Mental Ray: Glass by inetgrafx Mental Ray: Glass by inetgrafx
Hi there!

Currently I'm learning Maya 7.
Very cool 3d package indeed!
I tried to render some glass materials as photo realistic as possible with Mental Ray.
The left glass turned out a bit thick, but ... I don't care :)
Comments and critiques are very welcome!

Techniques used:
Final Gathering, Caustics, Image Based Lighting with HDR Images, etc ...

Materials used:
Dielectric, Lglass, Reflection Utility, etc ...

Rendertime:
2 to 3 hours

Did you create your glass materials from scratch or did you get them from somewhere?

So amazing...this is the sort of stuff I'd love to learn how to produce with Maya. It looks so real! I wish I could see the untextured polygons of it.

Cool rendering. although I'd suggest the following:
1. make your liquid very slightly intersect with glass, so from outside it fills the glass completely and doesn't leave a gap from liquid to outer glass (check a real filled glass for reference)
2. dielectric is nice, but i'd give a try to mia_material_x with preset, Physical glass.
3. check the IOR for glass and liquid, differences between them makes it more realistic.

I love in maya or max how easy it is to make things look realistic, final gather and mental ray go a long way.

Indeed, mental ray is amazing! Looks good, one nitpick perhaps turn up the recursion depth on the refractions. There appear to be some null (black) refractions around your edges, but it's a minor thing and still looks amazing!

It's definately people like you that make me really intrigued and want to learn how to use these programs.
For fun, I sent the image to a friend. Her reaction was ".... and?...... WAIT is that CG?!" :)
Awesome. I love how it looks like there's a window with a yard in the reflection of the glass.

Really nice render. I wish my renders would come out like that in mental ray... wish I knew what material settings you used, even though I use 3ds Max 8.

Great work :) Caustics look great too.

Amazing work, I hate rendering so bad lol. The only thing that's odd, and maybe this happens in life, the line on the tall glass in the back. The darker part on the bottom seems very strange to me... It doesn't follow the bottom of the glass so I'm just wondering why that worked. Beautiful work! I love the shines.

So what's reflected in the glass? It looks like windows inside a house on a sunny day. Whatever it is I'd be interested in knowing how you did it.
